Over the last ten years, advancements in molecular biology and research have allowed scientists and dermatologists to come together and study the various facets of hair follicle biology including pigmentation, immunity and even stem cell biology. Besides the important function of maintaining the skin temperature, hair has played an important role in our appearances. Across cultures, the styling and coloration of the hair has become a symbol of social communication and status. Loss of hair has indeed caused a deterioration of self-esteem in many individuals. Hair loss can occur not only through bad lifestyle or health conditions, but research has shown that over 250 types of genetic disorders directly result in the promotion of hair disorders. Noticing these hair disorders can be a useful tool in the diagnosis of diseases at early stages that can develop to severe symptoms later on in life.
